It’s that very exciting time of the year again, next week is the PeSA Annual Internet Conference. This is THE conference that you would want to go to if you run an Online Store, or have anything to do with eCommerce and the Digital world.
I’ve posted the video on this blog before, but it’s that great that it deserves another post, check out the even highlights of 2013, this year it’s going to be even bigger and better! At OME, we are looking forward to meet with everyone there, learning and listening to the awesome speakers and panelists, and just have a LOT of fun with people who are as passionate about the Online Industry as we are!
PeSA Internet Conference 2013:
Rather than reinventing the wheel with networking tips, I’ have collated some of the tips that I personally have found useful on what to do at a conference!
1. Start the work and networking prior to the conference
Yes, put the work in networking! Research the speakers and look at their websites and their back story. Maybe some light stalking on Linkedin couldn’t hurt as well, just lean more towards being professional rather than creepy… For the PeSA Gold Coast Conference, you can check out the speaker profiles here.
Additionally, also come in with some sort of agenda, know beforehand what you’re looking for at the conference, what business challenges are you trying to solve. Research the companies and/or potential partners that will be at the conference, hunt down their booths and ask the relevant questions. Of course during the conference you will have more ideas and questions popping up, but it’s always good to come prepared.
2. Get to the point quickly
Flowing on from the second half of my first point, it’s a fair to assume that the people at the conference all have limited time and have their own agendas as well. When approaching a speaker or panelist, have the questions ready and get to the point in the conversation, all the while staying polite and professional. Should you want to discuss any of the topics deeper, ask to connect outside the conference and have a proper discussion. Offering to do it over coffee and/or beers couldn’t hurt as well!
3. Collect business cards and connect
There will be a LOT of people at the conference, either they are fellow company owners, managers, exhibitors, speakers, staff members etc. Traditionally you should bring lots of Business Cards to hand out, couldn’t hurt, but more importantly connect with the relevant people quickly either via Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, email and any other channels – remember to include a personal message, quick summary and also how you can help/work together with them.
4. Listen and get involved
The speakers are there because they have great experiences and stories to tell, when in the workshop and keynote, and more importantly when you have the chance to talk to the relevant people. Have the mindset that you are there to learn and also to have a healthy discussion about the topics.
5. Have fun, smile and enjoy your time
Plain and simple, we are all there to learn and also to have a bit of fun. While there are great knowledge to be absorbed, it wouldn’t be as useful if you’re not enjoying your time doing it. Personally I’ve been to a lot of conferences, it’s awesome and uplifting to see a lot of smiling faces, heated discussions and bursts of laughter all around.
6. Bring breath mints
Nothing worse than coming off with the wrong first impression! Bring breath mints, or one of those strips thing. Gum is okay as well, but be wary of the chewing, it can get annoying to other people.
Bonus Point: Come see me and the team!
Bit of shameless self-promotion here, for PeSA Gold Coast 2014 I’ll be roaming around the conference floors and workshops. Most of the time I’ll be standing with many of our partners, so don’t forget to come by and say hi, I’m very keen to see everyone and help out. For those who don’t know, I look like this:
