Google is the online version of the Mafia

The Sopranos is one of my all time favorite TV shows; Mafia movies and TV shows have always been a genre I have absolutely enjoyed to watch – the action, the drama and the personalities – what is not to like? One of my much loved aspects of The Sopranos is the profession they are apparently in – ‘waste management’. This is brilliant as it is an employment catergory that can connect to multiple industries, it can be a front for other businesses, it’s a job that needs to be done that no one knows a lot about it and it does allow you the ability to get rid of waste such as bodies. And these reasons are why I think Google is an online version of The Sopranos’ – except for the dead bodies aspect. Continue reading

Google no longer going to protect trademarks and brands

Earlier today I was forwarded an email by an industry colleague – the email was alerting me to a change in Google’s policy. Announced today Google will no longer monitor or restrict keywords for ads in response to trademark complaints – this business decision will effect China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Brazil – and as Google states brings their approach to those countries inline with their approach to the rest of the world. PeSA Q1 2013 meeting with eBay Australia Executives

I can report that we had a very productive meeting with eBay management.  The quarterly meetings with the PeSA board are held confidentially so we cannot give specific details regarding upcoming changes or policy movements. Many of the issues that you have raised on this post have already been identified as “pain points” for sellers by eBay management and solutions are being addressed with many being rolled out over the course of this year.

2012 eCommerce review and 2013 eCommerce projections

Chris Morley was interviewed by John Lynch of Digital Ministry in December 2012 about the year that was in eCommerce, as well as what to expect in the 2013 year. Chris highlights the importance of service, and the online sellers need to replicate the in-store experience, with Surf Stitch, The Iconic, ASOS and John Lewis leading the way with examples others can follow. As for 2013 – data and Big Data, along with an ongoing connection to service and social media were all mentioned by Chris as being key indicators for success in 2013.

Gen Y and beyond will never shop at Myer

ABS retail figures for November were released showing a stark drop in sales for that month – whilst not unusual, it is concerning the month before the biggest trading month, Christmas, that retail figures are not only low, they have in fact decreased dramatically. What makes this more concerning is that online sales figures via NAB show a whopping 27% increase YOY. Many will make mention of an online sales increase in November as consumers buy in time to ensure delivery before Christmas – not to mention the successful Click Frenzy event in November that played a part. 2013 should be a year of Retail Influence

Australian retailers and their association recently stated their post Christmas and Christmas sales figures were OK without being spectacular – retail giants Myer and David Jones have reported modest Boxing Day sales figures, both will reportedly be posting minimal sales growth figures in the next few weeks.
